# Understanding Community Care Eligibility for Veterans who live in Houston or the Greater Surrounding Area

Navigating the healthcare options available to veterans can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding eligibility for community care. Community care is designed to provide veterans with access to necessary healthcare services outside of the traditional VA facilities. In this post, we’ll discuss the key eligibility requirements to ensure you have all the information you need to access the Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Podiatric care you deserve.

### Key Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for community care, you must meet two crucial requirements:

1. **VA Health Care Enrollment**: You need to be enrolled in the VA health care system or be eligible for it. This means that if you are a veteran who has served in the military and meets specific criteria, you should be able to access VA health benefits.  More than likely you have a VA Medical Card with your picture.

2. **Approval from the VA Health Care Team**: Before you seek care from a community provider, it’s vital to obtain approval from your VA health care team. This requirement ensures that your care is coordinated effectively and is in line with your overall health plan.

### Why It Matters

Understanding these eligibility requirements is not just about accessing care; it’s about ensuring that you receive the right treatments in a timely manner while benefiting from the support systems in place through the VA.

### Next Steps

If you believe you meet these requirements and need to explore community care options, it’s important to reach out to your VA health care team. They can provide guidance on the approval process and help you understand your options for community providers.

You may be eligible to see the doctors at Texas Heart and Vein Multispecialty Group for specialty care such as cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, or podiatric services if:

If the VA can’t schedule an appointment for you at a VA health facility that’s within a 60-minute average drive from your home. Or they can’t schedule an appointment within the next 28 days. In each of these cases, you’re eligible to get specialty care from an in-network community provider.
